If you’re the type of person to accidentally respond ‘you too!’ when the waiter says ‘enjoy your meal’, and then proceed to cringe for the rest of the week, we’d like your attention. 

A home massage is a social situation that’s easy to overthink, especially if you’ve never booked one before. You might catch yourself questioning every miniscule detail in an attempt to avoid awkward moments before they happen. But we’re here to put your mind at ease – there’s nothing to stress about (we promise!).

So if you notice yourself wondering what to say when you open the door, or you start over-analysing the spa playlist to play on your Alexa, return to this not-so-strict guide as your home treatment comfort blanket.

What should I wear before my treatment? Are PJs or a dressing gown okay?

The beauty of being in your own home is that you don’t need to worry about looking your best – you can wear whatever you feel comfiest in before your treatment. 

That said, remember that your home is also your therapist’s workspace for the next hour or so. You can help them feel comfortable by dressing in clean, comfortable clothes when they arrive. 

As we always recommend showering before your treatment, it’s fine to wear a dressing gown – just remember you must wear underwear on your lower half at all times during your treatment.  

Your pro will give you privacy to undress to your underwear (bra optional, if you wear one) and then lie down under a towel on the massage table before your treatment begins.

Should I offer to carry the massage table upstairs/downstairs?

While it’s thoughtful to offer, don’t feel like you have to help. Your therapist is trained to move their equipment safely and will handle setting up and collapsing the table themselves. 

If your space is tricky to navigate, they might ask for a little help, but you’re not expected to say yes. Otherwise you can relax and let them do the heavy lifting, quite literally.

One thing you can do to help your pro is fill out the pre-booking information in the Urban app. Here you can let them know if you have any stairs or, even better, access to a lift. That way your therapist will know what to expect.

I never know what to do while my therapist sets up – any ideas?

If you’re someone who can’t bear the idea of an awkward silence and shiver at the thought of small talk, you might dread the time it takes for your pro to set up the table. Feel free to do your own thing while they do theirs, no need to stand and watch. 

It won’t take long for them to get ready, so maybe grab yourself a drink, set up some music on your speaker or finish off that chore you were in the middle of. 

If you’ve prepared the room before they arrive, such as made space for the massage table and got the towels ready, it should only take between two to three minutes. If you’re not in the room, they’ll let you know when they’re ready to get started.

Should I offer my therapist a drink?

It’s always a lovely gesture to offer your therapist a glass of water or a tea, but don’t be surprised if they politely say no – pros are advised not to accept food or drink while working and usually bring their own water bottle.  It doesn’t hurt to offer though if it’s second nature to you.

Can I have my massage outside?

The idea of a garden massage might sound dreamy, but it can be a bit of a logistical nightmare for your therapist. There’s the sun, the wind, the bugs and uneven surfaces… which aren’t ideal for creating a calming environment. 

Most therapists prefer to keep things indoors where it’s comfortable and controlled. But if you’re really sold on the idea of an outside session, have a chat with your pro ahead of your booking via the Urban app. Just be prepared for them to gently suggest sticking to the living room.

If they do say no, you can still enjoy the fresh air by opening any windows or doors before your pro arrives. And if either of you get too cold, they'll be happy to close them during the treatment.

If I’m having a full-body treatment, should I shave my body hair?

This is a common concern, but it’s totally up to you. Your therapist is there to provide a relaxing experience and won’t judge your grooming habits and whether you shave or not won’t affect the quality of your treatment. 

If shaving will make you feel better then go for it, but it’s never expected of you. The only thing that matters is your hygiene, so as long as you’re clean and comfortable, you’re good to go.

What if I’m self-conscious about my body?

It’s completely normal to feel a bit self-conscious, but remember that massage therapists are professionals who have seen all body types. Their focus is on helping you feel better, not on judging your appearance. Try to shift your focus to the healing and relaxation benefits of the massage, knowing that your therapist is there to support you, not critique you.

Will they judge the music I put on?

Creating a home spa atmosphere is always encouraged – alongside candles and fluffy robes, a calming playlist is a great way to help yourself unwind.

Whether your go-to is a generic spa playlist, the sound of ocean waves, soft jazz or even whale sounds (it’s a thing), your pro will appreciate whatever helps you relax. Feel free to press play before or after your pro arrives, whatever works for you. If you’d rather not worry about it, most therapists bring their own speakers along for ambience. 

Do I have to make small talk during the massage? What if it's awkwardly quiet?

It’s totally normal not to chat during your massage treatment. You might find you naturally engage in a bit of small talk at the beginning, but there’s never any obligation to make conversation. 

If you’d like to set expectations that you want a quiet treatment from the get-go, you can say something like “by the way I’m not being rude if I don’t chat, I just fancy a bit of peace and quiet”.

When should I eat — before or after a massage?

If you’re planning to eat before your massage, we suggest sticking to something light. You don’t want to be too full and uncomfortable during your treatment, but a little fuel can help you avoid feeling lightheaded afterward. But this does depend on the type of treatment you’re getting and whether you’d like your stomach to be massaged (which is optional).

If you’re booking a particularly intense session like deep tissue or sports massage, wait an hour or so after eating before your treatment. And if you’re planning to eat after, make sure to hydrate as well to help your body recover.

What if I need to pee during a massage?

You can absolutely ask your massage therapist to pause the treatment if you need to use the bathroom. It's important that you're comfortable and relaxed during your massage, and your therapist will understand that you might need a break. Just communicate your needs and they’ll set out so you can get dressed, they’ll carry on with the session once you're back and ready.

What if I'm too ticklish?

It’s quite common to be ticklish, especially your feet. Let your therapist know if you have ticklish or sensitive spots – they can adjust their technique or pressure to make the experience more comfortable.

What if my stomach growls during the massage? 

Stomach gurgles are natural and happen to everyone, especially when you're relaxed during a massage. Your therapist has likely experienced this countless times and won’t be phased by it at all. A growling stomach is simply your digestive system doing its thing, often as a response to relaxation. You don’t need to apologise or feel embarrassed.

What if I make a noise, like a sigh, without realising it?

Involuntary sounds like sighs can be a natural response to the release of tension. Therapists recognise these as signs that their work is effective, so they won’t judge you and might even take it as a positive sign.

How do I communicate that the pressure’s not quite right?

It’s important to speak up if the pressure is too soft or too firm. A short and simple “could you go a bit lighter/firmer?” is all that’s needed – they’ll be glad you asked as they’ll want to deliver a comfortable treatment.

What if I fall asleep and start snoring?

Falling asleep during a massage is more common than you might think! It’s a sign that you’re deeply relaxed and fully benefiting from the treatment. Most massage therapists consider it a compliment because it means they’ve helped you reach a state of total relaxation

If you start snoring, don’t worry – therapists are used to it, and they won’t think it’s odd or embarrassing. In fact, they’re likely to continue the session without any interruptions, allowing you to enjoy the experience fully. If you're concerned about this beforehand, you can mention it to your therapist, but know that there's no need to feel awkward if it happens.

Should I tip? If so, how?

It’s up to you whether you’d like to tip – there’s no obligation. You can do so via the Urban app once your booking is complete and 100% of the tip will go to the pro. Please don’t offer your therapist cash as they won’t be able to accept it.

Taking time out for yourself with a home treatment should be exactly that, a treat. So whether you’re in a robe or in leggings, second-guessing your music choice, or haven’t shaved in a while – remember that none of it matters. And hopefully next time you reply ‘you too!’ to the waiter, that won’t matter either.
