Emily from UrbanGot a trip to Edinburgh planned? Whether it’s your first visit or your 50th, there’s always something new and unexpected to try. From Harry Potter-inspired tours to visiting a year-round Christmas shop, there’s lots to choose from.
So to help you decide, we’ve put together our team’s favourite things to do in Edinburgh for a unique experience, so you can enjoy the Scottish capital in a way that others won’t.
1. Pretend you’re at Hogwarts
J.K Rowling lived in Edinburgh while writing Harry Potter, and as soon as you step foot in the capital you’ll quickly recognise the iconic film sets.
Even if you’re not a huge Harry Potter fan, exploring Edinburgh through the lens of the film is a bit of fun. From the colourful shop fronts of Victoria Street (the real-life Diagon Alley) to Greyfriars Kirkyard, where you’ll spot names like Tom Riddle on the gravestones, you’ll see where she got her inspo from.
For true fans, we recommend taking a Harry Potter walking tour – it’ll take you to all the key spots, with plenty of stories about how Rowling wrote the books in Edinburgh cafés like The Elephant House.
2. Try a macaroni pie
If you’ve never heard of macaroni pie before, think of it as Scotland’s answer to comfort food: cheesy, creamy macaroni baked into a flaky pie crust. It’s as rich as it sounds (and then some), but it’s a must-try when you’re in Edinburgh.
Our go-to spots for a good macaroni pie are The Piemaker on South Bridge, where they make them fresh daily, or Scott Brothers Butchers, who are famous for their pies. Grab one to go and enjoy it as you explore the city – though we recommend sitting down for a bit after.
3. Unwind with an at-home massage from Urban (us!)
City breaks are exciting, but they’re also tiring – forget needing a holiday after your holiday, and book a convenient at-home massage instead.
Simply download the Urban app for booking ease, then pick your treatment, time and place, choose your therapist, and we’ll take care of the rest. A pre-vetted therapist will come to you – yep, even if you're booked into an AirBnb or hotel.
If you’re doing lots of walking, a deep tissue massage is the best remedy. Or if your break is all about relaxing, our relaxing massage fits the bill quite nicely.
4. Try traditional haggis at Arcade Bar
Haggis is Scotland’s national dish – so it’d be rude to not give it a go in the capital. We recommend heading to Arcade Bar if you want to give it a try, they serve it up with the traditional neeps and tatties (that’s mashed turnips and potatoes to us), along with a generous splash of whisky sauce.
There’s also more unique ways to try this classic, such as haggis bon bons, haggis stuffed chicken, or its vegan version. All their food is made from scratch, so even if Haggis isn’t on your Edinburgh list, you’re still set for a good meal at Arcade Bar.

5. Take a day trip to Loch Ness
Loch Ness is one of our favourite day trips from Edinburgh. It’s about three hours away, so you’ll want to set aside a full day, but the drive (or train ride) is worth it.
The loch itself is stunning, and there are plenty of guided tours that make the trip easy, often including stops at other scenic spots like Urquhart Castle or the village of Fort Augustus. Or, if you’d rather keep things simple, you can enjoy a quiet walk along the shore and take in the scenery.
6. Feel festive all year round at The Nutcracker
You don’t need to wait for December to get into the Christmas spirit – The Nutcracker Christmas Shop is open year-round, and it’s full of ornaments, decorations, and festive goodies.
It’s tucked away along the Royal Mile, so you shouldn’t miss it! Even if you’re not looking to buy anything, it’s such a fun shop to explore. If you’re here during the holidays, it’s an absolute must, but we love popping in any time of year for a little festive cheer.
7. Try some unique ice cream flavours at Joelato
When the sun’s out in Edinburgh (but more likely when it’s not), we’re always heading to Joelato. That’s because it isn’t your average ice cream shop – they’re known for their inventive flavours (without the artificial flavourings), think sticky toffee pudding, gingerbread, or even rhubarb, custard and crumble.
It’s a step up from your usual 99p flake, and is perfect to take for a wander through Princes Street Gardens.
8. Enjoy live folk music at Sandy Bell’s
For us, nothing says Edinburgh like live folk music in a cosy pub. Sandy Bell’s is one of our favourite spots for it – it’s small, welcoming, and always lively when the music starts. Most nights, you’ll find a group of musicians playing everything from traditional Scottish tunes to modern folk classics.
What we love most about Sandy Bell’s is how relaxed it feels. Whether you’re there for an hour or the whole evening, it’s a great place to experience the local culture.
9. Try whisky tasting at The Scotch Whisky Experience
Whisky fan? Then we think the Scotch Whisky Experience should be on your list if it isn’t already. Their tours walk you through the whisky-making process, from the malting of the barley to the ageing of the spirit.
But the highlight is the tasting – you’ll get to sample whiskies from different regions, each with its own unique flavour. You’ll also get access to the whisky vault, where over 3,000 bottles are on display. You may even find a brand new favourite to take home.
Its location is handy too, right on The Royal Mile and close to Edinburgh Castle, so you can easily fit it into your day without the need to travel far.
10. Enjoy afternoon tea on a double-decker bus
If you’ve not got long in Edinburgh, kill two birds with one stone with the Red Bus Bistro – a tour of Edinburgh’s landmarks with a side of afternoon tea. This vintage double-decker bus will drive you to all the must-see areas, and you can just sip your tea, enjoy a scone while taking in the sights.
11. Walk to Cramond Island
Cramond Island is one of Edinburgh’s best-kept secrets. It’s a tidal island just outside the city, connected to the mainland by a causeway that’s only accessible when the tide is out (so check the timings before you go!).
The walk to the island is half the fun, with views of the Firth of Forth all around you. Once you’re there, you’ll find old WWII ruins and plenty of picturesque spots.
12. Head to cat cafe Maison de Moggy
We have a few cat lovers on our team, which is why Maison de Moggy has of course made the list. It’s Edinburgh’s first cat café and home to a group of pampered cats who are more than happy to lounge around while you enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.
If you’re missing your own pets back home, this is a great way to fill the void for an hour or two. Just make sure to book ahead, as slots tend to fill up quickly.
13. Explore Stockbridge Market (Sundays Only)
If you’re lucky enough to be in Edinburgh on a Sunday, make Stockbridge Market a must. It’s small but packed with stalls selling everything from handmade crafts to freshly baked goods.
We like to grab a coffee and have a leisurely browse, picking up a few treats along the way. The market is surrounded by Stockbridge’s beautiful streets, so it’s worth taking a little stroll around the neighbourhood afterwards.
14. Have a laugh at The Stand Comedy Club
For a relaxed evening, The Stand Comedy Club is the place to go. It’s one of the best comedy clubs in the city, hosting a mix of up-and-coming comedians and big names.
The intimate setting makes every show feel personal, so whether you’re there for a headliner or an open mic night, it’s always a great time – and the perfect way to end a day in Edinburgh.
